Description

'Festac Head' is a striking metal sculpture that pays glorious homage to one of the most recognizable symbols of African art and cultural heritage. Inspired by the iconic 16th-century ivory pendant mask of Queen Idia—which served as the official emblem for the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC '77)—this piece captures the regal dignity and historical weight of the Benin Kingdom. Cast in a highly polished, gold-toned metal (likely brass or bronze), the sculpture features meticulous detailing. The figure's face is characterized by bold, serene features, pierced pupils, and the distinctive twin vertical scarification marks on the forehead.

Artist Statement
Through the timeless medium of cast metal, I sought to capture not only the physical presence of my subjects, but also the weight of the traditions they carry—reflecting the strength, mystery, and enduring spirit of our heritage. The metal allows each subject’s essence to stand immortalized, radiant with the pride of our history.
