Description

This painting was inspired by my mum's old Chinese plates. Now that she's passed on, I thought to myself, "what do I make of these, do I sell them or keep them?". Then the thought came to make a painting of these wares. The past is the conduit for the future and if we fail to pay attention it, we would not only loose the lessons we ought to learn but we it would also be difficult to discover the treasures ahead.

Artist Statement
Every attempt at an artwork is like holding a tablet of destiny in my hands, with the freedom to make of it what I want, every brush stroke having a message, coming together to make the painting a living entity. Despite painting using photo references, I do everything possible to capture the unseen elements: the energy, the rough texture of nature, the uncertainty of life and the subjectivity of outcome. All these are evident in the heavy brush work and suggestive strokes in my works.Though I would not want to be boxed in the 'isms' of the art world, my works are somewhat a blend of Impressionism and Realism; They combine the spontaneity of the Impressionists with the colours of Realism. So we could call it "Impressionistic realism". My works could however, take a different turn as I look to place priority on the painting than on nomenclature.

We were all born as free, as queens and kings, lords over our own decisions. We however become slaves to our own choices and decisions, some to our advantage and some to our disadvantage.

Description

The world seems fast and everyone is on the move to be the next trend and the talk of town, the young people especially. This takes a toll on their mental well-being, yet they still keep the cameras up and pretend that all is well. Also, this painting captures the nothingness in the structures we have built or that has become the order of the day: the low attention span and less attention to details, we avoid longterm gain for short term pleasure. All these are a scary pointer to the fact that if we are not careful, we may not be remembered for great strides and long lasting impact.

Description

This painting is an allegory of the Nigerian populace. There is a popular saying in Yoruba that "Alaru to nje buredi, awo ori e lon je ti ko mo": meaning, the burden bearer that eats from his labor will suddenly get to know that he is only losing the hair on his scalp. The political class has always used poverty as a weapon and the populace who are most times, on the losing end still decide to hawk ballot boxes for the temporary food that would only last for moment. Like the bald scalp, soon they would realize that they are only sacrificing the future that they won't be able grow back. I hope they discover truth before its too late,
