Born 13th August 1978 at Abavo, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria, Steve Ekpenisi had his early education at the Nkwo Primary School, Udomi, Abavo, and secondary education at the St. Charles College, Abavo. He later proceeded to the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State, where he later majored in Sculpture and graduated with the Overall Best Student Prize having clinched a Distinction in the 2007/2008 academic session.
 
Ekpenisi’s journey as an artist began at a tender age of five. He spontaneously engaged himself in innocent exploits without knowing what and where it would lead him to. Oftentimes, his parents got angry with him because he destroyed and used their electronics and other gadgets for his artistic exploits.
 
A highly dedicated artist who embraced the studio as his abode of work and comfort, the common denominator in his works has, over the years, been his strict attention to intricate details and elegant features that culminate in perfect treasures that the world beholds in awe.
 
In all forms of the metal medium, his sculptural masterpieces have evolved as their thematic amplification derives from Nigeria’s cultural heritage and socio-economic relevance. He is not unaware of the ever-evolving dynamism of the global society. His works have maintained constant and strict craftsmanship that emits power, strength, and wealth.
 
One of Ekpenisi’s inspirations is his diminutive stature; he is fondly regarded by his colleagues and admirers as Small Body, Big Engine. Within the extremality of his bottomless artistic pouch, he creates extraordinary sculptures that do not equate with his body size; this is a pointer to the truth that humans can achieve the impossible when they are determined and committed to it.
 
Over the years, after many years of experimentation and consistency, Ekpenisi has adopted metal as his most fluent medium of artistic expression. He meticulously works with metal plates shredded into tiny strips, rods, brass, stainless steel, mild steel, scrap metal, and more. His sculpture is usually executed in figurative (anthropomorphic and zoomorphic), imaginative, realistic, and semi-abstract expression. Indeed, his creations are of contemporary global standards.  
 
Watching Steve work in his studio is a theatre of delight. He wrestles with metal, cuts, bends, and weaves into artistic precision. This is more like speaking a language the metal understands to succumb to his command. The sparks from the welding machine supplies a dramatic effect that gives legitimacy to the unending strokes of workmanship invested in his creative process. It is obvious that Steve Ekpenisi derives utmost satisfaction from the theatrics of his creative progression and end result.
