Question and Answer with Blessing Adu

Q1. How did your artistic journey begin? What factors influenced your decision to pursue art?

I have been on my artistic journey since a young age. I would draw in the back of my schoolbooks to the point of getting punished for it. I was also inspired by the roadside artists I passed on my way to school, and I wondered how they could create such beautiful paintings. This was one of the factors that motivated me to pursue art.

Q2. Are there any particular artists that have influenced your artistic Journey?

The likes of Yemi Bell (my late teacher), Abiodun Olakun, Ibe Abanaba, Oyekale Segun, Samson Bakare, and other artist colleagues had made several influences on my journey as an artist.

Q3. Walk us through your creative process. Are there any routines that help you tap into creativity?

I find inspiration in the everyday activities of people, such as surfing the internet, taking a quiet moment, and so on.

Q4. What artistic style and techniques do you use in creating your artwork?

My artistic style is a unique one whereby I break the skin of my model and then mend them by stitching some areas back. It has its meaning as I try to portray life as it is. Everyone has a bit of brokenness in them (such as pain, sorrow, death of loved ones, money included) and we all have ways in which to mend them by getting solutions and trying to move on. And that is what my stitching tries to portray.
