Q and A Segment with Oluwasogo Oladele

Q1.What initially encouraged you to pursue art as a career?

I chose art as a career because of my deep love for creating and expressing ideas visually. Art allows me to communicate emotions, stories, and experiences in ways that words sometimes cannot. Even when I am not in the best mood, entering my studio brings me a sense of peace. The simple act of holding my brush and working with fabrics calms my mind and reconnects me with myself.

Q2. How has your ongoing Bachelor's degree in Fine Applied Arts at Adeyemi University of Education influenced your artistic development and perspective?

The program has helped me develop stronger technical skills across different areas of artistic practice. Studying art at the university has also expanded my understanding of art as a powerful form of communication and cultural expression.

I have been exposed to various artistic movements, African art traditions, and contemporary practices. This exposure has encouraged me to think more deeply about the stories, emotions, and cultural values my artworks can represent.

Q3: Your use of reclaimed fabric and mixed media is a distinctive element of your work. What inspired this unique approach?

My mixed-media approach allows me to move beyond traditional painting and create works that feel more tactile and expressive. The layering of materials symbolizes the layers of human experience, culture, and emotion that I seek to communicate through my art.

I also noticed that many artists focus primarily on painting, so I challenged myself to explore a more distinctive approach that would make my work unique and stand apart.

Q4. Your work frequently explores the intersection of identity, culture, and everyday life. How do you represent the complexities of Nigerian and African identity in your art?

I explore identity through figures, posture, and emotional expression. The characters in my artworks often represent ordinary people—musicians, mothers, young people, or quiet reflective figures.

Through them, I communicate personal stories, emotions, and everyday struggles, many of which are inspired by my own background and experiences.

Q5. In what ways do you believe your art emphasizes the beauty that already exists in the world, particularly in contexts that might be overlooked or undervalued?

My work centers on the beauty embedded in everyday human experiences. I am deeply interested in the quiet moments of daily life—the gestures, emotions, and interactions that often go unnoticed but carry immense dignity, resilience, and meaning. By focusing on these moments, I aim to highlight the strength and grace that exist within ordinary life, especially in spaces or stories that are often overlooked or undervalued.

Storytelling is at the heart of my artistic process. Each artwork serves as an invitation for viewers to pause, look more closely, and reflect on the hidden narratives behind what they see. I want my audience to move beyond the surface of the image and begin to question the story, the emotions, and the experiences that shaped it.

Q6. Could you discuss the inspiration behind a specific work from "The Alchemy of Resilience," such as Chromatic Bloom or Last Born of the Family, and its significance?

“The Alchemy of Resilience” explores how people grow through family, culture, struggle, and transformation. Through imaginative mixed-media works, the series reflects on the idea that resilience is not only about survival but also about the ability to transform life’s experiences into something meaningful and beautiful.

The work “Chromatic Bloom” reflects the idea that resilience often unfolds quietly, much like a flower emerging after a difficult season. The piece was inspired by the way individuals absorb the pressures of family expectations, cultural identity, and personal struggles, yet still find a way to grow and express themselves. The layered colors and textures symbolize emotional depth and the accumulation of lived experiences—each layer representing moments of challenge, reflection, and renewal. In this sense, the “bloom” is not sudden; it is the result of endurance and transformation.

Within The Alchemy of Resilience, the work represents the moment when struggle begins to shift into self-realization. It speaks to the beauty that can emerge when one embraces both vulnerability and strength. Ultimately, Chromatic Bloom embodies the core idea of the series: that resilience is not simply about surviving hardship, but about transforming those experiences into growth, identity, and creative expression.

Q7. Your art aims to give a voice to the misinterpreted, misunderstood, and misrepresented. Can you share a specific instance or artwork where you felt you successfully achieved this mission?

One artwork where I felt I truly gave a voice to the misinterpreted and misunderstood is a piece I titled “Last Born of the Family.” In many African homes, especially within cultures across countries like Nigeria, the last child is often seen as the “baby” of the family sometimes overly protected, sometimes dismissed as unserious or dependent. Society often interprets them as spoiled or weak. But in reality, many last-born children carry silent expectations, emotional intelligence, and a deep awareness of family dynamics.

Q8. What advice would you offer to emerging artists, particularly those from Nigeria or similar cultural backgrounds, who are seeking to find their unique voice and make their mark in the global art scene?

One of the best pieces of advice I can give is study but don’t copy. Learn from artists around the world, but do not lose your individuality by trying to replicate their style. Study techniques, storytelling methods, and composition, then reinterpret them through your own perspective and be patient with your growth. Developing a recognizable artistic voice takes time. Experiment with any medium of your choice and themes. Every painting or drawing is part of the process of discovering who you are as an artist.

Q9. How does your philosophy "life is only a series of marked canvases" guide your creative process and your approach to new projects?

This philosophy encourages me to embrace imperfection and spontaneity. When I approach a new project, it gives me joy and I don’t like leaving the work until is done. It also reminds me that no mark is wasted. Sometimes an unexpected line, color, or texture leads the painting in a direction I did not initially plan. Rather than erase it, I often build upon it, allowing the work to evolve naturally. In this way, the painting itself is unpredictable, layered, and constantly unfolding.

Q10. What are your aspirations for future projects or exhibitions?

One of my goals is to develop larger, more immersive exhibitions where viewers are gathering to see different works and the news can take it like e.g Solo exhibition I want each exhibition and work to tell a deeper story about human connection, memory, and identity. I also aspire to exhibit internationally, bringing stories inspired by everyday African life to my viewers around  the world.
